Sontarans are a clone warrior race from the planet Sontar, renowned for their militaristic culture and devotion to battle. Commanders are typically field officers, leading squads or legions in military campaigns.

Distinctive features of Sontaran Commanders include their brown, potato-like appearance, stocky build, and a single weakness: a vent located on the back of their neck, the Sontaran Respiration Spine, which is necessary for their survival and can be exploited in combat.

Notable Sontaran Commanders encountered by the Doctor throughout the series include Commander Linx, Commander Skorr, and Commander Strax (who later became an ally). While their individual personalities may vary, they all share a fanatical dedication to war and a belief in the Sontaran Empire's superiority.
